Science in Action: Growing Copper(II) Sulfate Crystals š¬ š
Year 8 students at AIS Basel recently took part in an engaging experiment to prepare copper(II) sulfate crystals. Step by step, they applied their understanding of chemistry to create vibrant blue crystals:
1ļøā£ Adding copper oxide to warm dilute sulfuric acid, producing a striking blue solution of copper(II) sulfate.
2ļøā£ Filtering the mixture to remove excess copper oxide.
3ļøā£ Carefully evaporating the solution using a Bunsen burner.
4ļøā£ Leaving it to dry on a watch glass, where the crystals formed as the water evaporated.
This experiment offered a practical exploration of chemical reactions and crystallization, connecting classroom learning with real-world applications.

Exploring the Microscopic World of Tulips š·
Year 10 students at AIS Basel recently took a closer lookāliterallyāat the world of tulip pollen.
By examining the intricate structures of these tiny grains, they gained a deeper understanding of how pollen carries the male gametes required for fertilization.
This hands-on activity also highlighted the journey of pollen during pollination, from the anther to the stigma, giving students a practical perspective on the role pollen plays in the reproductive cycle of tulips.
A fascinating way to connect theory with observation.
