Social awareness in action: Grade 7 supports local and global causes ♥️

As part of their recent SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) lessons, students at AIS Basel explored the theme of social awareness, discussing how acts of kindness and community service can have a positive impact on both individuals and those around them.

Inspired by these conversations, Grade 7 students put their learning into practice by organizing two successful cake and lemonade sales.

Their initiative raised over 200 CHF, which will be shared between two meaningful causes: a children’s home in India—supported for many years by the ABS Basel’s music teacher, Ms. Brändle—and the Basel animal shelter.

This project not only reinforced key SEL concepts but also encouraged empathy, collaboration, and a deeper understanding of what it means to contribute to a community—locally and globally.

Blending Nature and Technology in Science Class 🌿📱

In their Double Award Science course, students at AIS Basel explored the plant biodiversity around their campus using quadrat sampling.

By placing quadrats at random locations and identifying plant species with the help of Google Lens, students combined scientific methodology with digital tools to gain deeper insight into local ecology.

An engaging way to connect classroom learning with the natural environment—precise, hands-on, and tech-supported.

Decorations, Ice Cream & Team Spirit ✂️🍧

The Pre-IGCSE students at AIS Zurich are putting their creativity to work as they prepare decorations for this year’s Summer & Graduation Party.

With a great sense of teamwork and enthusiasm, they’re crafting designs that will help make the celebration feel extra special.

At the same time, the dedicated Student Council has been busy making and selling homemade ice cream to raise funds for the event—an initiative that’s as impressive as it is delicious.

We’re proud of everyone’s commitment and look forward to celebrating their efforts on the big day.

Exploring Genetics 🧪🔍

In A Level Biology at AIS Basel, students investigated genetic transformation using a creative and tactile approach: replica plating with plasticine.

To model how scientists identify genetically modified bacteria, students formed colonies—some embedded with coloured “plasmids” to represent transformed cells. By pressing these plasticine colonies onto simulated “plates,” they mimicked the process of transferring bacteria to environments containing antibiotics.

Only the modified colonies appeared on the antibiotic plates, their colour making them easy to distinguish. This vivid experiment offered a clear visual understanding of how selective growth helps identify genetic changes.

It’s a strong example of how AIS Basel brings scientific concepts to life in meaningful, interactive ways.

Habituation in Snails – A-Level Biology in Action 🐌

Ever noticed how a snail stops reacting after you tap its shell a few times?

That’s habituation — a form of learning where an organism gradually stops responding to a harmless, repeated stimulus.

In the A-Level Biology class at AIS Basel, students explored this first-hand.

With repeated gentle touches, the snails eventually stopped withdrawing into their shells — a clear sign that their nervous systems had adapted to the situation.

It’s the snail’s way of saying: “No danger here — no need to waste energy!”

A perfect, real-life illustration of the nervous system in action.
