Exploring Reactions and Color Changes 🔬✨

In A Level Chemistry, learning isn’t just about theory—it’s about seeing science in action. AIS Basel students recently explored the fascinating reactions between ammonia and copper chloride, revealing key chemical concepts through striking colour changes.

From the initial formation of an insoluble pale blue precipitate to the deep blue hue of a complex ion, this experiment highlights:

🧪 Precipitation reactions – observing insoluble copper(II) hydroxide form
🔄 Complex ion formation – showcasing ligand exchange in action
🎨 Color changes – understanding how chemical structures influence appearance
⚛️ Ammonia as a ligand – exploring coordination chemistry in real time

By engaging with these reactions hands-on, students deepen their understanding of solubility, equilibrium, and the role of transition metals—essential knowledge for advanced chemistry studies.

Ready for Summer & Graduation Party🎂💰

The AIS Zurich Student Council put in great effort to fund this year's celebration – and they did it in the sweetest way possible.

Thanks to the sale of delicious homemade treats, the students successfully raised funds to make the graduation party even more special.

A huge thank you to everyone who baked, sold, and supported the cause.

Now, we’re even more excited about the big celebration.

From Snowy Slopes to Creative Explorations ⛷️🎭🔬

Recently, AIS Basel Year 7 & 8 students had two exciting ways to spend their time – either skiing in Graubünden or taking part in a dynamic Activity Week in Basel.

While the ski group enjoyed perfect conditions in the Swiss Alps, the students in Basel explored creativity, science, language, and local culture. From hands-on experiments in “Science Unbound” to artistic projects in Art & Creation, every day brought something new.

A Fasnacht workshop added a festive touch, while the Epic Explorers set off on exciting excursions around Basel.

Whether carving through the snow or discovering new ideas in the classroom, it was a week filled with adventure, learning, and unforgettable moments.

Flipping the Odds 🔄

In their final lesson of the term, AIS Zurich students explored experimental probability through a hands-on challenge: the perfect bottle flip!

Working in groups across six stations, they tested bottles filled to different levels (0/5, 1/5, 2/5, 3/5, 4/5, 5/5) to see which had the best chance of landing upright.

Before flipping, they discussed key factors affecting success—such as water level, technique, throw height, and surface type—then formed hypotheses and put them to the test. Some groups took turns flipping, while others had one person throw and another record the results.

After five minutes at each station, students calculated the relative frequency of successful flips. The results?

The bottle filled to 2/5 had the highest success rate, while empty and full bottles proved the trickiest to land. A fun and insightful way to see probability in action.
