Discovering How Crude Oil Becomes Useful Products

Year 10 students at AIS Basel have been exploring the fractional distillation of crude oil in science.

By learning how crude oil is separated into useful fractions such as petrol, diesel, and bitumen according to their different boiling points, students are connecting classroom theory with real-world industrial processes.

It is a great example of how science at AIS Basel encourages curiosity, critical thinking and a deeper understanding of the world around us.

Growth, Confidence, and 6 Awards 🏅

AIS Basel was proud to attend PORGMUN in Prague for the third time, taking part in one of Europe’s most respected Model United Nations conferences.

A delegation of 14 students from Years 9 and 11 represented the school with enthusiasm, commitment, and maturity. Throughout the conference, they impressed not only in debate but also in the personal growth they showed along the way.

It was especially rewarding to see younger and less experienced delegates grow in confidence, find their voice, and contribute so thoughtfully in their committees. Beyond the debates, the experience was filled with connection, learning, and memorable moments shared as a group.

At the closing ceremony, AIS Basel’s delegation was awarded 6 prizes out of around 30 awards presented among approximately 300 participants — a fantastic accomplishment.

Science lessons with a creative twist 🫁🧪

In biology, AIS Basel students staged the big showdown between aerobic and anaerobic respiration, using painted posters, models, and even stories to highlight the differences between the two.

In chemistry, the elements of Groups 1 and 7 were “on the run”, and the young detectives of Year 9 set out to uncover their names, propertie,s and reactions.

The result: a collection of clever wanted posters featuring alkali metals and halogens.

From cell respiration to chemical investigations, Year 9 at AIS Basel has been turning science into something visual, memorable and fun.
